William asks…

My 1-yr old dog has a heart murmur, will she die early? Could she just “drop dead” anytime?

I need to be prepared for her death as I love her so! I am giving her fish oil tabs – any other heart healthy tips would also be welcomed! Thanks!

David answers:

What does her vet say about her care and life expectancy?

Ruth asks…

Anyone Have some good tips to a healthier Heart?

I’m 19 and starting to suffer from heartburn, I’m wondering if it’s complications from me not eating alot, i’m a workaholic who just keeps working till i’m done b4 I eat…Any tips or info will be much appreciated!! :o )

David answers:

Heartburn is generally nothing to do with the heart and its health, heartburn is caused by an excess of stomach acids, you should try to eat more often, even if its only little snacks, leaving your body without food for prolonged periods of time is not a good idea, especially if you drink tea/coffee whilst working as it can lead to stomach ulcers, it doesn’t really matter what you choose to eat when you are busy, just as long as you do eat. Healthy foods won’t make you pile on the pounds but often don’t keep you feeling full for very long, so definetely try some carb’s. If the problem persists you should see a doctor.

Daniel asks…

What are some healthy tips for a runner?

I don’t run, I haven’t run, I suck at running. I just got back from the first workout I’ve done since my pregnancy, and I couldn’t make it five minutes before I felt like I was having a heart attack and was going to vomit. Then I spent the next hour or so coughing up air.

What are some tips to help me gradually improve without injuring myself?

David answers:

Slow it down. You don’t have to run to run. Get into a pace that’s too fast to walk and you’re jogging. Do that for a mile.

Practice breathing. Find a rhythm that works for you. I breathe in and out on each left food, so it’s very rhythmic and soothing. I’m well-trained with breathing so I don’t even have to think about it anymore.

Keep at it. That’s the only way you’ll get good.

Lizzie asks…

What are some good ways to have a healthy heart?

What kind of exercises should I do? and what foods should I eat, and not eat? Im not a smoker by the way.

Ive been wondering because im an great 100m/200m sprinter but those long distance runs KILL ME. Plus my gym class in highschool is doing the Mile Run, I know it wont get healthy all of a sudden, but i want to start now, Tips?

David answers:

Foods rich in Omega-3′s, low cholesterol and/or high in poly- and monounsaturated fats are good for the heart.

Twenty minutes of raising the heart rate at least four days a week is also recommended.

Mandy asks…

On the verge of a heart attack, how to eat healthy?

Okay so someone I know and love is close to a heart attack and is completely unhealthy. smokes and has high blood pressure. and good ideas to make better, healthier meals? and some tips on quitting smoking? anything is helpful (: thanks

David answers:

It is really hard to get someone else change their habits unless they want it. I know it must be hard to sit by and watch someone do unhealthy things to themselves. I used to sneak vegetables into almost everything I made for my kids like grated carrots, etc. In spaghetti sauce, meatloaf, anywhere I could get away with it.

Read The China Study and you will learn how important it is to be on a vegetarian diet. If the person is not ready for vegetarianism, baked chicken and turkey are a good way to go with lots of vegetables and fruits on the side and making “hamburgers” out of ground chicken or turkey with half grain and spice mixture.

We used to buy this grain spice mixture in the natural foods store. It is a dry mix that they sell to be re- hydrated to make veggie burgers.

I think possibly hypnosis is the only way to quit smoking. Maybe patches and nicotine gum might work. Good luck, and take care of yourself!

Oh, yes, and take the person for a little walk every day. This is great for improving the mood!
