Feeling forgetful? Suffering from short term memory loss? Are you having problems remembering things as you grow older. Have you ever forgotten where you parked your car, or forgotten names or dates? You may have forgotten where you left your glasses or keys, or that phone number you have dialed hundereds of times. According to the experts, this is perfectly normal as we grow older.
According to research half of people who are over 50 years of age have some degree of memory impairment and age associated forgetfulness. This short term memory loss usually occurs gradually and the symptoms vary in intensity from person to person.
dNormal age related memory loss can be temporary or permanent. Sudden memory loss is usually caused by some kind of brain trauma such a stokes, meningitis, epilepsy, or other diseases. Many prescibed drugs can cause problems leading to memory loss. Some of these are sleeping pills, painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs, blood pressure medicine and others.
To avoid possible risk factors, it is important to eat nutritional foods and get adequate sleep and rest. You should try to keep your blood pressure under control and get more exercise as well as making lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking. It is important to stay hydrated as dehydration is also a cause of memory loss. Try to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.
Another major cause of memory loss is stress. Memory loss can in many cases be treated by herbal medications and other dietary supplements which can reduce stress as well as improve memory, recall, concentration and mental clarity.
Some things to help you remember:
- Make notes and checklists
- Put appointments and other important dates on calendar.
- Put keys, glasses, watch, purse and other thing you use regularly always in the same place.
- Use an alarm clock to remind you to do some particular thing.
- Have relatives or friends remind you what you are supposed to be doing.
- Keep your focus on one thing at a time.
As with any physical or mental problems, always seek the advice of health care professionals
